Troubleshooting Corner: Hydraulic System Fault
Equipment: Caterpillar 320D Excavator
Fault: Intermittent slow or weak travel and implement movement after prolonged use, particularly when the hydraulic oil heats up.
Probable Cause: Worn or damaged Hydraulic Pump Swash Plate / Piston Shoe Assembly. When the hydraulic oil heats up, its viscosity decreases. If the internal clearances in the main piston pump (which are responsible for generating pressure and flow) are worn, the decreased oil viscosity allows for excessive internal leakage (bypass), leading to a significant drop in system pressure and overall power output. This is often an issue with the Caterpillar 320D main hydraulic pump.
Treatment Plan: 1. Inspection: Check the hydraulic oil level and condition. Take an oil sample for analysis. 2. Diagnosis: Perform a pressure and flow test on the main hydraulic pump. A case drain flow test will confirm excessive internal leakage. 3. Repair: If internal leakage is confirmed, the main pump needs to be disassembled. Replace the entire piston shoe assembly, swash plate, and all associated seals and bearings. In severe cases, a complete new or remanufactured hydraulic piston pump assembly may be required to restore the machine's performance.
